Review: Kestrel 4500NV Applied Ballistics Meter

By on February 10, 2015

I recently got the chance to check out and review the Kestrel 4500 Applied Ballistics from Kestrel Meters. Kestrel is most known for their wind meters, that are commonly used by farmers. Depending on the Kestel meter you get they have a wide range of functions. The 4500 AB version (AB stands for Applied Ballistics) is designed for long range shooters.

The Kestrel 4500 AB is not just a wind/weather meter. It also can take these measurements and apply them to bullets and it will figure out a accurate ballistic solution. When we first got the 4500 AB it came nicely packed in a box. We also got a nice belt clip case with ours to keep it safe while out in the field. When you first get your 4500 AB meter you have to calibrate it, basically you go into calibration mode and rotate it 360 degrees three times. The meter will confirm the calibration has been completed and unless you replace the batteries you will not need to this again. You are able to set up 16 different gun types, The meter also comes with various pre-loaded models.

Next we had to set the date and time, the menus are straight forward. I was very impressed with how the meter preformed out in the field. The construction is great and it feels like a solid unit. With everything considered this is a great piece of gear. It is made in the USA and it does come with a warranty. I am looking forward to getting back out in the field once it warms up and testing it more thoroughly. We will be posting a video of our next outing using the 4500 AB

Here is a list of features the 4500 Applied Ballistics model has to offer

  • Custom Drag Curves
  • G1 and G7 support
  • Better PC application for ease of building library
  • Crosswind Jump: truing in winds without it can give you an errant MV
  • If you calibrate in one environment and move to a drastically different environment, the device will adjust automatically
  • Able to export the windage, elevation, wind speed via BT to an external device
