It is said that you use a pistol to fight your way back to the rifle you never should have put down in the first place. It also also said that handguns have one of the biggest advantages over rifles is that they worn not carried. By using a holster to carry your pistol, means that you never have to put it down. That would have a big advantage when fighting zombies in a zombie apocalypse. Having a weapon that is always with and also being able to carry another rifle or gear.
